An Introduction to www.feedsa.co.za

Founding member of
www.feedsa.co.za, Lisa Jehosefat, became aware, in 1998, of the increasing problem of hunger and wanted to do something about it. She also, on a personal level, wanted to give something back to the poorer communities and decided to combine the two. Along with this and loads of dedication, feed s.a was born.

Why was www.feedsa.co.za formed?

To help feed South Africans, particularly children, in need. We have been operating for two years, with the help of dedicated volunteers to ensure that the organisation and its projects, including the website, are run with maximum efficiency and minimum spend on non-essentials. While we would love to think that poverty and hunger will be eradicated entirely in our lifetimes, we are aware that this is unlikely. Against this sad reality, we have drawn a broad and ambitious goal helping to feed millions.

What is www.feedsa.co.za?

www.feedsa.co.za is a non-profit organisation, which collects funds to buy food, formed under the Section 21 Act. 90% of the funds in the www.feedsa.co.za account are for existing feeding programmes in South Africa. 10% of the funds have been used to create other projects for children from underprivileged homes and for administration costs.

Where does most of www.feedsa.co.za funding come from currently?

Current funding is primarily in the form of donations, which are given either via the website or as the result of personal efforts by feedsa’s volunteer members. The aim eventually is to generate a majority of the funding via
www.feedsa.co.za’s website, which includes an online shopping feature and a “one impression one mouth” function. This concept – marketed under the slogan, “click where it counts” – involves donations from companies based on the number of click-throughs on the site. The shopping platform showcases local arts and crafts. All efforts are being made to generate increased advertising revenue on the site.

How will www.feedsa.co.za generate ongoing and sustainable sources of funding?

j & e productions was formed in January 2002 to help raise funds for
www.feedsa.co.za. j & e production’s main objective is to raise awareness of www.feedsa.co.za through events as well as other creative fund raising projects. These include beadwork programmes, events, music productions, and a range of upliftment programmes. A percentage of all profits generated by j & e productions will go www.feedsa.co.za. j & e productions will be run separately as a for-profit organisation. The company will be independently audited and has committed a percentage of its revenue to www.feedsa.co.za.

What structure is being implemented to ensure transparency and maximise efficiencies?

www.feedsa.co.za will be audited annually by G L Palmer. Patrons from major South African companies will be invited to sit on the board. The aim of this is to tap into business expertise and creativity from a range of industries, and to ensure transparency and adherence to best practices. The board of directors will meet monthly. In addition, the website will be organised to ensure maximum transparency, with a full list of organisations being assisted and the amounts of money they are receiving. Monthly income and expenditure statements will be posted on the site.
